Library Orientation
- The Burlington College Library, located on the back of this floor near the kitchen, has about 12,000 titles, including 1,000 videos, and more than 50 current journal subscriptions.
- The library website has access to everything we are going over today so if you forget something you can look for it there.
- The Library is typically open 9 am to 9pm Mon- Thurs, 9am to 5pm on Friday and 10am to 4pm on Sat. and Sun.
- I say typically because all evening and weekend hours are staffed by work study students. Sometimes there is no one available to work and other times workers don’t show up so if you live off campus please call the library or the front desk to verify the library is open.
- If you qualify for work study and are interested in working in the library please come and see me. There are several positions available and schedules can be made around your classes.
- If you want to find out what is in the library you can use the online catalog or you can browse the shelves. Those of you who concentrate in Photography will find most materials in the TR’s, Cinema Studies the PN’s or the Manchel Collection.
- Writing PE, Literature and Poetry PS, and Transpersonal Psychology BF, but it is also good to use the catalog or ask because some books can be two sections. For example.
- Road to Freedom : Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement is shelved with books on African Americans even though the book is 90 % photography. Does the Library have my textbook?
- The library does not buy textbooks, but it may happen to own it so if you want to save money look for it in the library catalog. Some of your teachers put a copy of your class texts on the reserve shelf, you can find out by looking in the library catalog.
- Once you find what you want all you need is your student ID to check it out. You can check out 3 movies at a time for 7 days with one renewal. You can check out 15 books at a time for 28 days with 6 renewals.
- All items can be returned at the circulation desk or the book drop by the main entrance. The library does not charge late fees. However, if an item is 30days overdue you will automatically be charged a replacement fee.
- The replacement fees can be found on the library website under Circulation Policies. The library has two computers for doing research or finishing papers. There is also one viewing station to watch films that are on reserve or for library use only. What about journal articles?
- The library also has several online databases, JSTOR, Wilson Biography, and InfoTrac. All of the electronic databases can be accesses from any computer on campus, but they have passwords, you can get the passwords at the circulation desk in the library. JSTOR is the only database not accessible off campus. What if I can’t find what I am looking for?
- In addition to the Burlington College Library you also have access To Bailey Howe Library at UVM. Some things you should know about borrowing materials at UVM. You can see what the library has before you go. There is a link to the Bailey Howe website on the Burlington College Library website.
- You must have your Burlington College ID. You can only check out books. If you want a movie or documentary you have to watch it there. Each book can be checked out for 28 days, an overdue notice will be sent to your Burlington College email, so check your email.
- UVM charges late fees and failure to receive the overdue email does mean you do not have to pay the fine. So be sure to return the book/s or you can renew them online. A work study student or Jessica can show you how. Does anyone have any questions so far?
