Inter-American Studies: Requirements

Every Bachelor of Arts degree candidate must complete Burlington College’s General Education requirements and must earn a minimum of 120 credits to achieve a degree. The following course requirements are specific to the Inter-American Studies major.

Major Requirements
36 credits past the 9 entry level credits are required. All courses are 3 credits unless otherwise noted. Other coursework may be substituted with permission of academic advisor.

Entry Level (100) 9 credits
• Environmental Science/Ecology/Geography—
3 credits from the following:
–   Cultural Geography
–   Environmental Science
–   Introduction to Ecology
• Spanish I *
• Spanish II*

Intermediate Level (200) 9 credits
• Spanish III*
• Comparative Government/American History—
3 credits from the following:
–   Caribbean History, Culture, and Environment
–   Comparative Law and Government: U.S., Canada, Chile
–   The Creation of a New World
–   U.S. History: 1865 to the Present
–   Latin American History, Culture, and Politics
• Economics—3 credits from the following:
–   Patterns of Wealth and Poverty
–   Economic Theory
–   Other learning activities, such as guided independent study, may be arranged to fulfill this area
Intermediate Level Electives 3 credits
Choose 1 additional course from the intermediate level courses above or below.
• African-American Literature and History
• Constitutional Law
• American Indian Literature
• Radical History of the ‘60s
• Ties that Bind: American Family Dynamics in Historical Context

Upper Level (300) 6 credits
• Spanish IV*
• Research Methods in the Social Sciences OR
Search and Research

Travel 3 credits
To be arranged and approved with academic advisor.
• Agriculture, Politics, and Community Service in Puerto Rico (course)
• Spanish Intensive in Mexico (course)
• Cuba Study-Abroad Semester (15 credits)
Travel opportunities are available in Nicaragua, Ecuador, Cuba, Mexico, and other locations in the Americas. Educational travel can range from 3 to 15 credits, and except for specific courses, is limited to upper-level students.

Internship 3 credits
