A Learning Module is a fluid and comprehensive approach to learning that encourages you to examine an area or issue in depth while addressing specific requirements of a major or other general education requirements for a BA degree. Each module specifies learning goals, what you will do to complete them, and how you and your instructor will evaluate your progress. Learning modules are either 6 or 9 credits each. If you register for full time study (full time is considered 12-15 credits), you will have one 6-and one 9- credit module for each semester, for a total of 15 credits. If you register as a part time student, you will have a 6- credit module one semester followed by one that is 9 credits.
Because a learning module carries so many credits, the study is often interdisciplinary in nature. This allows the student to have a breadth of learning across diverse disciplines as well to gain a deeper understanding of the topic being studied.
Academic standards for each Learning Module:
As with the campus-based program, all learning in IDP is competency-based. The following are examples of learning modules from three different majors. The first is a module from a Transpersonal Psychology major; the second is a module from a Writing and Literature major; and the last is a module in an individualized major in Culture Theory and Studies. These majors are all designed with input from learner, advisor and faculty consultant and the modules are constructed with the input and guidance of the Burlington College instructor with whom the student is working. The three following modules are representative of modules that students develop; they provide a good illustration of the content and work involved in this program.
