Lauren Sullivan, Class of 1999
"I came to Burlington College in the fall of 1997 after having attended two other colleges and universities which were not a good fit for me. I was sick of being lost in the crowd, and of having professors not know my name halfway through the semester. Here I found the individualized attention I was looking for. Although I had been and still was studying human services, I was looking for more flexibility in the path I chose to get to my degree. Burlington College offered me the freedom to design my own curriculum by choosing or creating classes which best fit my interests. I was also offered the opportunity to gain a different perspective on many issues by taking classes taught by community members who were simultaneously working in their field."
"Another part of this program included an internship, which I did with a local nonprofit organization called ACERCA (Action for Community & Ecology in the Regions of Central America). I spent my last semester writing a report for them based on some of my research in the field. Immediately upon graduating in June 1999, I was offered a position as Assistant Coordinator at ACERCA. I have been with ACERCA now for almost two years, and I have learned more than I ever imagined was possible in that amount of time. I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for the special attention I received at BC and the flexibility I was given to choose my own path to success."
ACERCA is a project of the Alliance for Global Justice and a member of the Native Forest Network (www.acerca.org)
