Water Wars

Wednesday, September 7th
Dr. Michael Klare, author of Resource Wars: The New Landscape of Global Conflict and Director of the Five College Program in Peace and World Security Studies in Amherst, Massachusetts, will be the kickoff speaker of the series on September 7th at Burlington City Hall. Klare’s talk, Resource Wars, will focus on the implications of scarce global water resources for security and conflicts. Dr. Klare is the defense correspondent of The Nation and a regular contributor to many journals, including, Foreign Affairs, Harper's, International Security, Le Monde Diplomatique, Mother Jones, Scientific American, Third World Quarterly, and World Policy Journal.

Wednesday, September 14th
The next forum, Government and Non-Government Organization Cooperation on Water Resources, will feature Burlington Mayor Peter Clavelle, and Lake Champlain Committee Representative Lori Fisher.

Wednesday, September 21st
Artist’s Reception & Book-signing
Professor, poet, photographer and journalist Marjorie Ryerson, will present Water Music: A Tribute to the Inspiration and Magic of Water, and will discuss citizen activism through art. Her book, featuring sixty-six renowned musicians who have contributed memoirs, music and lyrics to accompany Ryerson’s dazzling photographs, will be available for sale on-site. Ryerson’s photographs will be on exhibit in the Community Room from September 10th to October 15th.

Wednesday, September 28th
The History of Lake Champlain will be the subject of the discussion led by Matt Davis, Burlington College Professor and Education Coordinator for the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s Schooner Project.

Wednesday, October 5th
The Vermont Council on World Affairs will be hosting Lester Brown, who will speak on The Global Water Crisis.

Thursday, October 6th
St. Michael’s is hosting the final forum of this project, the Global Water Resources Symposium, featuring Dr. Jeff Albert of the Center for Environmental Studies at Brown University as the guest speaker. The foreign students will report the findings of their research in Vermont.
