The Burlington College Garden needs YOUR help.
What's gone down this year!
Last Saturday, with the help of students from Matt Davis's Social Ecology class, friends, students, and BC professors, we broke ground. Here is what we all did:
1. The soil was turned and nutrient rich compost was added, raised beds were made
2. morning glory seeds were picked from last years seed pods to be saved and planted this year
3. aesthetic beautification was done via raking, and pulling weeds
4. the perennial herb garden was organized: the chamomile forest was clumped together
5. four varieties of lettuce were planted.
6. garlic was re-planted in a raised bed
7. and everyone shared stories and laughs
So far this year, there has been a seed planting day over at Genese Grill's house. Tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, squash, beans, herbs and flowers were started, all of which are almost ready to place outside in the cold boxes. (the cold boxes are the wooden framed boxes with old windows resting on them in the garden. Go check them out. Cold boxes are little greenhouses that aid to the hardening of plants)
We have also planted peas, kale, onions, and lettuce directly into the garden. The peas will be coming up where the tripod is stationed. The onion have been planted in the same bed as the garlic.
What we need help on!
So far this year we haven't met on any formal setting. However, we've been getting together when ever we can. For those of you who would like to be involved we will be scheduling a meeting after this semester ends. If you would like to be involved, please e-mail or call me Joshua at 207-576-5384 or Barry at 802-922-0077.
Things that we are constantly doing:
1. watering garden on a daily basis (hose is on the western side of the Haswell house)
2. fixing the fence (we need drift wood for this if you can find some down by the lake)
3. planting (seeds are locked up in shed) let us know if you want to help
4. weeding (once the season starts up).
5. looking for ideas on what to plant (we need you input)
Other than that, we can post meeting through e-mails.
If you are interested, let us know. Send us you contacts.
Thank you everyone to a great start in our second year.
BC Garden Crew.
