Burlington College Faculty Member Roz Payne Recognized
Roz Payne, longtime Burlington College faculty member, has received a prestigious $1,000 grant award to present her work from the Newsreel Collective Archives l967–1971 at the Association of Moving Image Archivists in Austin, Texas. She will be featured on November 31st, as part of a panel addressing the topic: Staying Indie: The Struggle to Maintain Independent Media from the Sixties to the Present.
Payne was a member of the Newsreel Collective of independent filmmakers, founded in 1967 to make and distribute political documentaries. Their films were about the events and issues of the day: organizing, students, the Black Panthers, Puerto Ricans, women’s liberation, national actions, the war in Vietnam, the youth culture and more.
Payne will be screening materials from the Newsreel’s archives, as part of the panel’s investigation of media collections created and used by independent news outlets. Newreel Collective films include: Only the Beginning, Off the Pig (Black Panthers), Amerika, People’s Park, Up Against the Wall Miss America, Summer 68, Yippie, and Free Farm.
In announcing the panel, the Association of Moving Image Archivists noted its importance. “The past decade has witnessed an unprecedented consolidation of media assets in the hands of a few commercial and government entities. FCC deregulation, corporate media mergers, and ties between government and media all resulted in a small number of corporations controlling an ever-increasing sector of the US news and information media. This panel will investigate media collections created and used by independent news outlets. Media supported by its users and not by its sponsors can provide perspectives that enhance the historical record by representing issues and communities that are not given voice through corporate media.”
Burlington College President Jane O’Meara Sanders congratulated Payne, saying, “Roz Payne is a tireless advocate for independent media and historical accuracy from a community perspective. She has given voice to sometimes unpopular or unknown views, always enriching the dialogue. Integrity and commitment such as hers is the hallmark of a liberal arts education and we are pleased that she brings a perspective on the past, as well as on current issues such as media consolidation, to our students.”
