Burlington College Filmmaker Honored
Deb Ellis, faculty member in Cinema Studies and Film Production at Burlington College for the past six years, is represented at this year’s Havana Film Festival by her film Howard Zinn: You Can’t Be Neutral on a Moving Train. The film, which Ellis co-directed with Denis Mueller and edited, has been chosen to be screened Tuesday, December 13th in Havana, Cuba. Premiered at the Vermont International Film Festival, Zinn won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Provincetown International Film Festival, and was short-listed for a 2005 Academy Award.
“What I love about teaching at Burlington College is that it is a place where I can really bring my passion about a particular subject into the classroom,” Ellis said. Some of the courses Ellis has taught at Burlington College are Topics in Documentary Film, Introduction to Cinema Studies, Women and Film, and Film Production. In congratulating Ellis on her achievement, President Jane O’Meara Sanders said, “We share Deb’s interest in anthropology and historical perspective, and are especially interested when they are perceived through lens media, as film is one of our leading majors. We are grateful that our students have the opportunity to work with a woman of her caliber.”
