Midpoint Portfolio Policies and Procedures

At midpoint (60 credits), the student is asked to demonstrate progress toward certain goals through a portfolio. In this portfolio the student will submit original work to demonstrate proficiency in the four fundamental learning skills—written communication, oral communication, critical thinking, and research methods—that are used across the disciplines. Those students who seek the A.A. must fulfill all the general education requirements at this time.

In some instances a student may petition to be exempted from GEN270-Research and Reflection and the Midpoint Portfolio process. Consult with your advisor about the specifics of submitting a 10- to 20-page research paper and support materials for assessment by the writing specialist. To prepare for submission of the midpoint portfolio, students enroll in GEN270 Research and Reflection. Passing this course at full credit level and achieving a score of 3 or 4 on the midpoint portfolio are both required in order for a student to proceed to upper-level work toward either the B.A. or B.F.A degree.

Students who pass Research and Reflection at full credit level but receive a score of 2 on their portfolio are eligible for the A.A. degree or may revise and resubmit their portfolio in an attempt to earn a score of 3 or 4 to permit them to continue their studies for the Baccalaureate degree.

Students who pass Research and Reflection at full credit level but earn a score of 1 on their portfolio may revise and resubmit their portfolio once in an attempt to earn a score of 2 for the A.A. degree or a score of 3 or 4 to permit them to continue their studies for the B.A./B.F.A. degree.

Awarding of a degree requires that all other requirements for the degree have been completed.

When a student passes Research and Reflection, but the subsequent midpoint portfolio evaluation falls below the respective level of overall proficiency for the A.A. or B.A./B.F.A. degree in the four fundamental learning skills, the student must revise and resubmit his or her portfolio within one academic semester. There is a fee for reading and evaluating the resubmitted portfolio. Only one resubmission is permitted.

A different assessment team will review the resubmitted portfolio. If it still falls below the proficiency level, another assessment team will review it an additional time, without any more revision by the student, before the determination is finalized. At that point, the student may appeal the decision to the Dean.

A student who either fails to submit an acceptable portfolio within one semester or does not achieve a passing level of proficiency in the fundamental learning skills after the review of the second portfolio will be unable to continue studying for the A.A. or B.A./B.F.A. degree.

Students who must resubmit the midpoint portfolio and who wish to have the benefit of additional instruction to assist them in preparing the portfolio may enroll in a Portfolio Revision Tutorial, which carries three non-degree credits. We strongly recommend that students enroll in this tutorial. Note that passing the tutorial does not guarantee that the student will meet the portfolio standards.
