Burlington College considers the on-campus living experience an integral and necessary part of the total education of its students. For that reason, all full-time, first-year students with fewer than 20 transferrable college credits are required to live on campus for their first year. This policy allows for the mission of college housing to be upheld as a means of fostering individual growth and community learning and preparing students to manage future living situations within the broader community. Requests for exceptions to this requirement must be made in writing to the Director of Student Services by July 1, 2010.
Transfer students are expected to secure off-campus housing. Assistance procuring off-campus housing is offered through the Director of Student Services office. Should on-campus spaces be available after July 1, 2010, transfer students who wish to reside in campus housing will be allowed to apply on a first-come, first-served basis, with no guarantee of housing.
All students requesting an exception from the residency requirement must fill out a Petition for Release from Residency Requirement, which can be found in Appendix B of the Housing Policy & Contract.
Exceptions will be considered for:
- Students residing at home with their family or guardian(s) within a 50 mile radius of Burlington College.
- Students who can provide proof of independent financial status or who are over the age of 22.
- Students who have a medical condition that necessitates an exception as judged by the Director of Student Services.
- Students who have a spouse, civil union, or any children.
- Students who have completed two or more years of military service.
Special note: Students should not make arrangements for alternate housing until they are notified by the Director of Student Services that an exception has been granted. If an exception is not granted, the student will be held financially responsible for the 2010-2011 Housing Contract.
On-campus student housing is not guaranteed for any transfer, part-time, or returning Burlington College student. Those students already familiar with the greater-Burlington area are expected to secure off-campus housing, as are those students who have participated in rental housing in the past. Assistance procuring off-campus housing is offered through the Director of Student Services office.
