Burlington, Vermont– President Christine Plunkett unveiled the Burlington College Vermont First Scholarship, an academic merit scholarship which awards free tuition to the top two academically ranked graduates of every Vermont public or independent high school approved by the Vermont Board of Education.
Vermont has over 100 public and independent high schools. The Burlington College Vermont First Scholarship is thus offering to over 200 qualified students in Vermont the opportunity to attend Burlington College tuition-free for the first year, and fifty percent tuition-free for three additional years. One year of full-time tuition (12-15 credits per semester) has a value of $22,410.
"Burlington College is committed to minimizing the financial barriers to higher education for Vermont's students," shared Plunkett. "These scholarships are one piece of our overall plan to make our college affordable for more students. The college is dedicated to helping students enroll in an affordable, quality educational program that benefits not only the individual, but also the communities that we live in."
The Burlington College Vermont First Scholarship covers 100% of tuition (not including fees, books or housing), less other financial aid, including federal and state grants, scholarships, employer tuition benefits, and VA educational benefits. The scholarship will be calculated into the overall financial aid package.
Valedictorians and Salutatorians interested in applying for Burlington College's Vermont First Scholarship must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Vermont state resident as defined by Vermont Student Assistance Corporation
- Provide documentation of class rank
- Be a current-year graduate (2012) of a public or independent high school approved by the Vermont Board of Education
- Apply for admission and enroll full-time at Burlington College for the fall semester of 2012
- Remain enrolled full-time for continued eligibility for this scholarship
- Apply for state and federal financial aid·
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress, including a 3.0 grade point average, to qualify for continuation of the scholarship
Burlington College has recently received national media attention for its innovative tuition initiatives. Any student who registers for classes at the college this fall will have no tuition increase for four years, provided they remain enrolled full time. Transfer students qualify for this tuition guarantee as well.
Burlington College's rolling admissions policy allows students to enroll in the fall 2012 semester up until August 15. Prospective students should attend Burlington College's Open House on Saturday, June 30 at noon to learn more about the new scholarship and tuition guarantee.
